Abstract

Journalism in the 21st Century can only be understood as connected to technological change. The introduction of new technologies not only affects professional routines or the relationship with the audience, but also has altered the classic parameters of journalism. The current media sector is determined by this transformation, hence the work Technologies that condition journalism aims to analyse in a general way the opportunities and challenges that imply these changes. Several authors reflect in this book on the possibilities that bring the integration of several digital tools in journalism. Specifically, these questions are examined: information overload; the development of a personalized journalism on the Internet that can promote disinformation; the growth of robotization and news automatization; the use of social networks by media; the transnational working of local digital journalism; and the role of news on technology in the shaping of a public opinion aware of the constant technical transformation. The book offers a broad overview, which explores the technological change through different phenomena in line with previous works that try to reflect on these processes in a unitary way. The researchers also address some dysfunctions of this structural change, although they start from an optimistic conception of journalism as a social activity and adaptable to the context.
