Abstract

Disinformation about feminism and its agenda has always existed, but its production and circulation has increased with the generalization of the Internet and social media to the point of becoming an increasingly serious problem of digital sexism. The aim of this research is to analyze the characteristics of the hoaxes about feminism and its agenda that circulate in Ibero-America through the new media. For this purpose, a content analysis of eleven variables is applied to the 271 denials published on the subject by eleven fact-checkers from eight countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Venezuela and Spain), all of them accredited by the International Fact-Checking Network. The results show the preponderance of hoaxes with fabricated multimedia materials or shared without alteration, published by fake, citizen and media accounts, with real or anonymous sources, with polarizing intentions, focused on gender-based violence against women and subsidies to feminist entities, and appealing to negative emotions.
