Abstract

The paper analyses the way in which the otherness of Unaccompanied Foreign Minors (MENA in Spanish) is constructed in the digital communicative environment of social media in Spain (Twitter, press, blogs and forums). To this end, 1.6 million conversations about MENAs and youth bands have been analysed between 2010 and 2021, categorizing the mentions between themes and sizing their volume. The conversation around bands has remained stable throughout the period and, on the other hand, there has been a drastic increase in the volume of mentions of MENAs since 2018. The polarization in the discourse about them is the main explanatory factor for this difference. An analysis of 1.3 million tweets has been conducted, defining four large communities of nodes with a dominant narrative: MENAs or bands as generators of conflict and defenders of MENAs or bands. Network analysis shows a low level of polarization in the conversation around bands while there is a clear contrast between the increase in the unfavourable position towards MENAs (especially generated by the extreme right) and the opposite process in left-wing positions. In this polarization, the volume of conversation is heavily tilted towards mentions of MENAs in a negative light, despite the responses of the group of their defenders.
