Abstract

Introduction. This study analyzes the state of Spanish productions for video-on-demand (VOD) platforms over a five-year period (2020-2024), aiming to identify common characteristics and patterns in Spanish audiovisual content from the main VOD platforms. It seeks to outline the recent landscape for both the industry and the audiences within the streaming universe. Methodology. Based on a mixed-method approach combining qualitative analysis with quantitative data, the article examines a total of 497 audiovisual productions created by the leading platforms in Spain. It identifies patterns related to forms, styles, production, and audience reception. Results. The findings highlight a growing interest in Spanish audiovisual production for VOD, particularly in serialized fiction. This trend is driven by platform and audience demand, with distinctive production characteristics shaping the new era of national fiction. Discussion and Conclusions. The study shows an evolution in the production and distribution strategies of Spanish serial fiction on VOD. Prime Video and Atresplayer are betting on seriality, while Netflix prioritizes high-impact miniseries. Binge-watching fragmented narratives, and documentary series gain ground. Quality and differentiation continue to be key to audience reception.
