Call for articles

The journal has five fixed Thematic Sections (TS) that receive original articles. Only proposals that fit within the scope of these Thematic Sections will be reviewed by the Editorial Board. Please consult the detailed descriptions in Thematic Sections.

The journal follows a continuous publication procedure; therefore, the call for articles is ongoing.

Step 1. Preliminary editorial review

Once an article is received, the Editorial Board, through the thematic editors, carries out an initial review to verify that it rigorously complies with the publication guidelines and fits the research topics of the Thematic Section.

This review will be completed within a maximum period of 30 days.

Depending on this initial assessment, the following outcomes are possible:

  • The article meets all editorial, thematic and formal criteria. It proceeds to the peer review process (Step 2).
  • The article does NOT meet one or more criteria. It is returned to the authors and archived. The procedure is closed.

Step 2. Submission to peer review

The article is sent by the editors for external evaluation to at least two reviewers.

Step 3. Review process

Reviewers have a maximum period of 4 weeks from the acceptance of the evaluation assignment.

Evaluation criteria:

  • Formal aspects: Relevance to the journal's and section's thematic scope; compliance with formal requirements; organisation and presentation of content; references in the latest APA edition.
  • Content evaluation: Originality; relevance of the topic; objectives and hypotheses; methodology; currency of references; scientific contribution of the conclusions and discussion.

Reviewers use an online questionnaire through the OJS platform.

If a reviewer is unable to carry out the evaluation after having accepted it, the editorial board will assign a new reviewer. If extraordinary cancellations affect the maximum timeframes, the author will be notified.

Specific criteria for audiovisual articles (IMDPC):

  • Coherence between the argument set out in the research statement and its articulation in the audiovisual piece.
  • Quality of editing decisions as a means of constructing analysis.
  • Rigour in the selection and treatment of the audiovisual corpus.
  • Technical quality of the piece (image, sound, subtitles).

Specific criteria for interactive multimedia articles (adapted IMDPC):

  • Coherence between the argument set out in the research statement and its articulation in the interactive product.
  • Quality of design and interaction decisions as a means of constructing analysis.
  • Correct technical functioning and accessibility of the product.

Step 4. Editorial decision

Once the evaluations have been received, the editors will make the final decision. In the event of doubts or disagreements, additional reviewers may be requested. The possible decisions are:

  1. Accepted without modifications. The article is publishable as submitted. Minor adjustments may be made during the final editing stage.
  2. Accepted with minor changes. The author must correct minor issues indicated by the reviewers and upload the revised version within the original submission (without creating a new submission).
  3. Accepted with major changes. Substantive changes are required. The revised version will be reviewed again by the same reviewers. If the modifications are not incorporated, the article will be rejected.
  4. Rejected. The article has significant deficiencies. It is returned and archived. Rejected articles may not be resubmitted.

In all cases, the author will receive an email notification with the Editorial Board's report and the evaluations.

Complaints and appeals process

Authors may submit complaints and/or appeals through the submission contact systems. The decision issued by the editors shall be final.

Step 5. Final editing

Approved articles will be reviewed by the editor. The corresponding author will receive the final document for approval within a maximum period of 7 days. No substantive changes to the evaluated text will be accepted.

Step 6. Final typesetting

Articles are typeset in the journal's various formats (HTML, XML, PDF, ePub). For audiovisual articles, the video is integrated into the article page. For interactive multimedia articles, the package is deployed on the server.

Step 7. Publication

Once the final edition has been prepared, the article is published in the open volume. Self-archiving will be encouraged to maximise dissemination.

The maximum time for publication shall not exceed 6 months from the favourable report.

Step 8. Research dissemination

The ICONO 14 communications team will contact the corresponding author for the recording of a video podcast and will request information for dissemination on social media. A consent form for the use of images and recordings will be required.
