The mass consumption of media in today’s society is an undeniable fact. People’s leisure time is dominated by the hours spent in front of a screen across the world and all social classes. Audiovisual communication acquires a particular significance in the context of the digital society (society-Network) in which we move, in which information and communication technologies pervade all environments of daily life.
Yet citizens are still ignorant of the media’s codes and languages and have few educational experiences to draw on to develop audiovisual media competences that will enable them to become audiovisually critical and “competent” citizens. This monograph reflects on the importance of audiovisual competence for training a new type of citizen in today’s society.
